The Benefits of Virtual Pre-Commissioning

Virtual Reality in use

In an era defined by technological innovation, the landscape of machinery design and commissioning is also undergoing a profound change. Leading this shift to offering virtual pre-commissioning is Georg UK, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of special purpose machines and test rigs.

Georg UK has used cutting-edge virtual reality technology to reshape their pre-commissioning process and their customer experience. Through immersive 3D simulations, customers can now see the design of their new machine before manufacture commences. Virtual pre-commissioning has become a crucial step in their machine design process.

Andrew Cheadle, Projects Manager at Georg UK explains: “We want to provide our customers with the best opportunity to visualise their equipment and that isn’t always possible with traditional 2D drawings. We now use virtual reality software to create walk-through videos that allows customers to see their machines in a life-like environment before it’s actually built. In a virtual reality world, they can walk around the machine and even interact with it!”

Developing a digital twin

The introduction of virtual reality has not only enhanced Georg UK’s commissioning process, but also allows their engineers to create realistic virtual scenarios in which the machine operates, highlighting any mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic performance issues which can be remedied before manufacture. This helps to reduce the overall risk of new machinery projects, minimise rework, overcome potential safety issues, streamline development time and reduce installation time on-site.

Andrew adds: “At Georg we use software simulation packages that enables us to test the digital model of the machine prior to machine build in our workshops. Following successful tests, we then move to integrate the real-life machine into the simulation, again pre-testing and commissioning the software and machine as one. This approach allows customers to even train their operators and technicians in advance of the machine being installed at their premises.”
